Evan Turnage is the director of the Southern Justice Project at the Open Markets Institute. He previously served as Chief Counsel for Senate Democratic Leader Charles E. Schumer and Senior Counsel for Senator Elizabeth Warren. In these roles, he led the Senate Democratic caucus on various judiciary issues, including antitrust, voting rights, judicial nominations, criminal justice, gun safety, and Supreme Court reform, and he spearheaded the caucus’s oversight of federal agencies’ competition enforcement efforts regarding mergers and monopolization. Evan was the lead architect of numerous bills supported widely by the caucus such as Senator Warren’s Price Gouging Prevention Act and Leader Schumer’s No Kings Act.
Prior to his work on the Hill, Evan was an antitrust associate at Kirkland & Ellis LLP where he advised clients on competition matters before the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department and maintained an active pro bono practice regarding criminal justice and policing issues.
A native of Jackson, MS, Evan earned his B.S. in physics and Spanish from Morehouse College, his J.D. from Yale Law School, and his M.B.A. from Yale School of Management.
