WASHINGTON - Open Markets Institute has submitted comments regarding the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) proposed rule to increase transparency in poultry contracting and tournament systems under the Packers and Stockyards Act (PSA).

“The proposed rule could help limit deceptive contracts in the chicken industry, but in order to truly address a system deeply rigged in favor of poultry dealers and in which many chicken companies exert monopsonist control over farmers, USDA must address consolidated market power and restrict the use of unfair business practices, including by banning the tournament system all together,” said Open Markets Institute Food Systems Program Manager Claire Kelloway.
