Open Markets Institute Condemns Sysco's Plan to Buy Restaurant Depot
“If we want communities with thriving local restaurants, farms, and food businesses, Sysco’s unchecked takeover of this critical step in the food supply chain has to stop."
Minneapolis, MN — Open Markets Food Program Manager Claire Kelloway released the following statement concerning the news that restaurant food distributor Sysco Corporation is planning to buy its competitor Restaurant Depot:
“Sysco wants to be restaurants’ only option for buying food and supplies. Restaurant Depot is a meaningful competitor for small, independent restaurants to price check against Sysco. Rolling it into Sysco will leave restaurants with shockingly few options and allow the giant to amass even more harmful market power to raise prices,” says Claire Kelloway.
“Sysco was created by merging nine food distributors in 1969, and the corporation has been on a mission to roll up food distribution ever since. If we want communities with thriving local restaurants, farms, and food businesses, Sysco’s unchecked takeover of this critical step in the food supply chain has to stop."
