Our response to the article, "The Antitrust Theory of Everything,” in The Atlantic
Washington, DC - The Open Markets Institute released the following statement in response to the May 26th article “The Antitrust Theory of Everything” by Jonathan Chait in The Atlantic:
“We appreciate Jonathan Chait's recognition of our pioneering efforts to protect and rebuild American democracy in the age of AI, tech oligarchy, and unprecedented concentration of economic power and control. We strongly welcome debate over our thinking and writings.
Economists generally agree that government policy plays a role in shaping markets toward particular outcomes. Our work advances a common-sense approach that says policy should help protect human liberty and democracy and build a more resilient economy.
As for political debate, people see clearly how concentrated power and greed has reshaped their lives. Families bankrupted by health care and housing costs, children's lives destroyed by social media, farmers driven off their land, the free press censored and starved for cash by tech platforms, workers trapped by noncompete clauses, small businesses living in tenancy to Amazon -- they recognize the problem too.
Open Markets will continue focusing on practical solutions that restore liberty, strengthen democracy, and make a fairer society.”
