The White House Executive Order on AI is an effort by the Biden-Harris administration to turn principles into action through leading by example and leveraging its power to set priorities for the federal government. By mobilizing the alphabet soup of federal agencies to collect information and examine how AI is used and the risks it poses in their specific domains, the U.S. is teeing itself up to have a more impactful conversation at the U.K.’s AI Safety Summit. The EO provides the administration’s assessment of the most pressing safety and security issues, some in significant detail, while recognizing that there is still a lot to learn about these, so expect a flurry of reports, papers, and committees to emerge in the coming months. The EO covers a lot of ground but focuses primarily on shaping how government agencies, particularly the Department of Commerce and the Department of Homeland Security, and existing law can address particular AI challenges while signaling to the private sector how the current government plans to address existing challenges.
